Clemson And Syracuse Fall Short Of Friday’s Total In ACC Action

NCAAF Season Record: 15-20-1 (-6.30)

We witnessed one of the most stunning upsets in college football this past Saturday when unranked Iowa State traveled to Norman as a 30-point underdog and beat then-No. 3 Oklahoma. Could it happen again when unranked Syracuse hosts No. 2 Clemson? If so, the Orange won’t need to overcome that big of a spread with the Tigers laying 22½ at Bookmaker, where the total is 56½.

ESPN will carry the Friday night fracas from the Carrier Dome beginning at 7 PM (ET). Clemson arrives at Syracuse alone at the top of the Atlantic Division of the ACC with a 4-0 conference record and an 11-game win streak on the line. The Orange are 1-1 in ACC action and searching for back-to-back wins for the first time since last October.

Dungey, Orange Have To Control Clemson Front 4

Most of the talk coming out of Clemson this week revolved around the health of quarterback Kelly Bryant. The junior injured his left ankle in last week’s win over Wake Forest and was originally listed as questionable. Head coach Dabo Swinney has since said he expects Bryant to start Friday, that news yet to affect the NCAA football odds. Backups Zerrick Cooper and Hunter Johnson, both freshmen, each saw action in the 28-14 victory over the Demon Deacons.

Whether it’s Bryant or someone else at QB for Clemson probably doesn’t matter that much to Syracuse head coach Dino Babers. Coming off a 27-24 win vs. Pitt, Babers has to find a way to move the football against a Tigers defense that ranks eighth in the country, allowing just over 264 yards per game, and fifth in scoring (11.3 ppg). Junior Eric Dungey is averaging more than 300 yards per game through the air, and like Bryant at Clemson, is his team’s leading rusher. This is definitely the best defense Dungey will have faced, and one that will apply pressure from the start with the Tigers third in the country in sacks (22).

Rivalry Trends, Final Thoughts & A Free Pick

Syracuse drew first blood in this rivalry before it was a rivalry, blasting Clemson in the ‘96 Gator Bowl, 41-0. It has been all Tigers since the schools hooked up as ACC opponents, however, Clemson winning the four ACC meetings and coming off a 54-0 shellacking of the Orange a year ago to almost double-up a 28-point spread. Three of the ACC encounters failed to reach the totals.

Clemson has next week off, so there’s no danger of the Tigers looking ahead. Swinney could yank Bryant early, though, to give his ankle extra rest. I like the ‘under’ for my free college football pick.
